What Your Business Card Says About You

As a business owner, networking is essential to expand your brand, generate leads, and develop valuable relationships with potential customers and partners. But, with so many professionals vying for your target audience's attention, you need to stand out from the crowd. A simple yet powerful tool that can help you make a lasting impression is a business card. Your business card is an extension of your personal brand and can make all the difference in whether someone remembers you or forgets about you. In this blog post, we'll explore what your business card says about you and how you can create an impactful design that reflects your brand and values.

1. The Quality of Your Business Card

The quality of your business card speaks volumes about your brand. A flimsy and low-quality card can give the impression that you are not invested in your business, do not take your profession seriously, or you do not have the required resources to produce good work. On the other hand, a well-designed and high-quality business card exudes professionalism, attention to detail, and showcases your brand’s high standards.

2. The Design and Layout of Your Business Card

Your business card's design is the first thing people notice, and it can leave a lasting impression. The design elements such as colors, fonts, and graphics should be consistent with your brand's personality and values. For instance, if you are a financial services company, your business card design may use bold fonts, solid colors, and a minimalist layout to convey trust, reliability, and strength. No matter the design, it should align with how you want people to see you and your brand.

3. The Information on Your Business Card

Your business card should include essential information such as your contact details, your company name, and your title. But, do not clutter your card with too much information. White space is your friend when it comes to design. Ensure that the primary focus is on your name and contact information, and keep any additional details minimal.

4. The Materials Used in Your Business Card

The materials used in your business card can make a significant impact. Consider using premium materials such as high-quality paper stock, embossed or debossed graphics, or even metal business cards when appropriate. These materials show you are willing to invest in yourself and your business.

5. The Call to Action on Your Business Card

One overlooked aspect of a business card is the "call to action." A call to action is a phrase or statement that encourages people to take a specific action. For example, if your business goal is to get more people to visit your website, consider adding a line such as "Visit our website for more information" on your business card. This call to action nudges people to engage with your business and learn more about your brand.

In conclusion...

Your business card is a powerful yet often overlooked tool in your business arsenal. A well-designed and high-quality card can go a long way in establishing your brand, building relationships, and even generating leads. Remember, the quality of your business card, its design and layout, the information included, the materials used, and the call to action all send messages about you and your business. By incorporating all of these aspects into your business card design, you can create a card that tells your brand's story and captures the attention of your target audience.

A Note From the Author

As a business owner, brand strategist, and graphic designer I run in to questions and ideas every day.

As the owner of Norris Design, I started out wanting to solely be a designer, but education changed the way I thought, the way I viewed business and the way I viewed my role in helping other's businesses.

Graphic design will always be my original love, but as I grew in knowledge, I realized the small view of design for the sake of something beautiful was such a disservice to businesses.

Businesses needed much more than just graphic design.  They needed to see the bigger picture of their businesses from the perspective of a designer.  Once I realized that branding had a huge role in large businesses that see amazing success but very few small businesses even think about branding or brand strategy, I realized that if I could offer a brand strategy view as a consultant rather than just an order taker graphic designer, I could actually move the needle in their businesses.

This is the beginning of where I started to fall in love with business, marketing, branding, brand strategy, consulting and brand building.

It all started with education after college.

I obsessively read articles, listened to podcasts, watched videos, read books, and took classes.  This was to fulfill this desire to be more involved in the businesses side of design rather than just design alone.

So, this is why I wright. I appreciate other people's perspective and I hope that one day, mine can help someone else.
